Born on 7 June 2003 in Kanye, Botswana, Letsile Tebogo’s rise from a rural upbringing to becoming one of the world’s fastest men is nothing short of remarkable. Raised primarily by his mother, Seratiwa, Tebogo found early escape and purpose in sport, first playing football and later discovering his exceptional talent for sprinting while at school. Sport not only offered a career path, but he has said it provided structure that kept him away from negative influences in his community during his youth.

His professional sprinting career began making waves in his late teens. At just 17, he won gold in the 100 metres at the World Athletics U20 Championships and followed that with silver in the 200m — a first for Botswana at that level.  By 2022, he had broken Botswana’s national 100m record and became the first man from his country to run under 10 seconds, setting a world U20 benchmark.

Tebogo’s defining moment arrived at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he made history as the first athlete from Botswana — and first African — to win Olympic gold in the men’s 200m*. His time of 19.46 seconds not only set a new African record, but placed him among the fastest 200m runners in history. He also anchored Botswana’s 4×400m relay team to a silver medal, showcasing his versatility and team spirit.

Beyond the Olympic stage, Tebogo has continued to shine. He’s been named World Athletics Male Athlete of the Year and won prestigious international titles, including World Championship medals and Diamond League honours.

Off the track, Tebogo has embraced his role as a global sports ambassador. In 2025, he was appointed Ambassador for World Athletics’ Kids’ Athletics programme, using his platform to inspire young people around the world to stay active and pursue their dreams. Recent reports also indicate the launch of the Letsile Tebogo Charitable Foundation, aimed at supporting cancer survivors and vulnerable communities in Botswana.
