Chidinma Adetshina
Miss Universe Africa & Oceania 2024
Chidinma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina, born on January 8, 2001, is a Nigerian beauty pageant titleholder who has captivated global audiences with her blend of poise, advocacy, and trailblazing achievement. As Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 and later crowned Miss Universe Africa and Oceania, she also secured first runner‑up at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant, marking the highest placement ever for Nigeria in the competition’s history.
Raised in Soweto and Cape Town, South Africa, Chidinma is the daughter of an Igbo Nigerian father and a Mozambican‑heritage mother. She grew up navigating multiple cultures, eventually pursuing a law degree alongside her burgeoning pageantry career.
Her rise to international prominence was anything but conventional. In 2024, Chidinma entered Miss South Africa and impressed all by reaching the Top 16, only to face intense xenophobic backlash questioning her nationality because of her Nigerian heritage. After communities online and public figures challenged her right to compete, she eventually withdrew for the safety and well‑being of her family.
Rather than derailing her ambitions, this controversy became a defining moment. The Silverbird Group, organisers of Miss Universe Nigeria, extended her an invitation to compete on behalf of her father’s homeland. Embracing that second chance, she travelled to Lagos and was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 — a victory celebrated by many as a testament to resilience in the face of adversity.
At the Miss Universe 2024 finals in Mexico City, Chidinma stood out for her confident stage presence and expressive representation of African beauty and heritage, earning the first runner‑up title and the continental crown of Miss Universe Africa and Oceania.
Beyond pageantry, Chidinma has used her platform to highlight unity, cultural pride, and empowerment. Reports indicate she has engaged in charitable outreach, including visits to displaced persons’ camps and significant donations to support vulnerable communities, reflecting her commitment to humanitarian impact alongside her public duties.
